Blizzard Entertainment updated the Google Play Diablo Immortal app today, December 3, 2020 in the afternoon.
However, shortly after I shared the news with the players at the Diablo Immortal Reddit’s Discord Channel, many players are complaining that this app update has added a message to their Google Play Diablo Immortal page:
“Your device isn’t compatible with this version.”
It is a big deal, because those who are being affected can no longer see the “Unregister” button — which means on their end they can’t confirm that they are still pre-registered for Diablo Immortal Beta. Image from RedOctober:
RedOctober read at DiabloNext an article (Spanish) where the writer Gayardos mentions his phone is no longer compatible after today’s update. This prompted RedOctober to check out his phone and his was no longer compatible either.
I asked RedOctober, and he replied he owns a Samsung Galaxy S8 (Snapdragon 835 / 4GB RAM) running Android 9.0 — not compatible. His Google Pixel 2XL (Snapdragon 835 / 4GB RAM) running Android 11 — is still compatible.
It is difficult to pinpoint what exactly this Diablo Immortal app update did to disqualify certain devices or Android versions.
For example, I have a Samsung Galaxy S10 running Android 10. It is still compatible.
So definitely, this Diablo Immortal update has removed some phones compatibility they had before today, affecting those who wished to participate in the regional beta testing.
Another possibility I haven’t explored is asking their location. Unsure if that’s a factor. Country doesn’t seem to be a factor. Someone from USA, Germany and another one from Middle East have compatible phones.
This is just one Google Play update. We don’t know if it is an oopsie that’s going to be hotfixed for those in the internal test who were affected, a temporary thing, or whether compatibility will be expanded by the time the External Beta Test begins. We can only wait to find out.
One thing we have learned out of this latest app update is that compatibility limits have been set by Blizzard. Is Blizzard preparing for External Beta Test behind-the-scenes?
A recent article I posted about Google acknowledging Blizzard’s participation in their closed alpha test for the Android GPU Inspector Tool might answer some of our concerns. So far that tool supports Pixel 4, Pixel 4XL, Galaxy Note 10 and Galaxy S10 running Android 11 — but based on some of the feedback today, it’s not conclusive. Few older models are still compatible. (UPDATE: I checked the latest device compatibility list supported by the Android GPU Inspector Tool — which Blizzard uses. Added the list in the blue accordion).

UPDATE (Dec 5 11:20pm EST): Diablo Community manager PezRadar posted in my Reddit thread to address the Diablo Immortal compability issue in general:
Post your response to these questions at the Reddit thread:
- Is your phone still compatible? Yes or No.
- What device model? (i.e. Samsung Galaxy S8, or anything else)
- What is your Android version? (i.e. Android 8.1, etc.)
- What is your CPU? (i.e. Adreno 635, Snapdragon 835, etc.)
- What is your RAM?
- What is your Storage? (i.e. 64GB, 128GB, etc.)
- Country (optional)
If you don’t know what your CPU is or other specs — download the CPU-Z app from Google Play to find out.
LIST OF COMPATIBLE AND NOT COMPATIBLE PHONES
Aurakite informs me he was a Elder Scrolls: Blades beta tester. He was pre-registered, but shortly before beta started, an app update rendered his phone as incompatible. When Beta started, his phone remained incompatible, but he downloaded an APK outside of Google Play (APKpure.com) and he was able to join the private beta.
Editor: I suggest installing the BlueStacks Android emulator — which has Samsung Galaxy S10 engine option in the Settings. Or the NetEase Mumu Android emulator.
I opened a Reddit thread to ask the model of phones that players who pre-registered to play Diablo Immortal Beta have:

All these devices were reported by Reddit contributors as incompatible after they visited the Diablo Immortal app in Google Play. I researched their model to find out what their GPU is for comparison's sake. There is only one GPU that I see as a wildcard: The Mali-G71. If you check the Devices Compatible by GPU Only Tab in this accordion, the Mali-G71 was compatible. This means that compatibility is determined by certain CPU and GPU combinations. In this case, the Mali-G71 GPUs that appear as not compatible in this list below is the Samsung Galaxy S8 (which comes in two CPU variations: Exynos 8895 (EMEA) or Snapdragon 835 (USA & China). However, there might be other factors.
The Samsung Galaxy Tab A 10.1" Tablet also has the Mali-G71 that appears in the Compatible list, but in this case the tablet is not compatible. Checking under the hood, this tablet has a Exynos 7904 CPU. The oldest phone with a Mali-G71 (the Samsung Galaxy S8+) in our compatible list has a Snapdragon 835 CPU (an alternate model of the Galaxy S8+ has the Exynos 8895).
Another wildcard is the Google Pixel 3a. It has the Snapdragon 845 CPU and Adeno 615 GPU. Yet, for some reason it is incompatible. At least 3 submissions share this model.
