This talk will provide 7 guiding principles that better define the role of the Art Director. These points will help both current Art Directors and those who work with them to define a set of best practices and foster the creativity needed to establish a game in it’s early days. I will discuss how these points intentionally or un-intentionally guided my experiences as the AD on Hearthstone.

Intended Audience

This talk will be applicable to not only Art Directors but any and all who have regular interactions with them. By the end it is my hope that the attendee will leave with a set of tools that might work for them on their own teams, in addition to a better understanding as to how and why their own AD may do the things they do. Garwulf’s Corner – What is Robert B. Marks Doing Nowadays?

Garwulf's Corner - What is Robert B. Marks Doing Nowadays?Fans of Robert B. Marks may be wondering what’s up with him. He wrote the first Blizzard Entertainment eBook… Diablo: Demonsbane. What’s he doing nowadays? Well, he launched a publisher company named Legacy Books Press based on Kingston, Ontario. Recently, he published a compilation of all the Garwulf’s Corner articles titled Garwulf’s Corner:An Odyssey into Diablo and the World Beyond the Video Game.

Robert emailed me today to inform he joined forces with (legendary Canadian-born fantasy writer and the original creator of the Forgotten Realms game world) Ed Greenwood to publish The Eternity Quartet: An Evil Wind (eBook). Those interested in supporting Robert, go ahead and read this new production for $2.99.

“It is the Spring of the World. The Great Ice has retreated, leaving verdant fields and fledgling new civilizations. It is a time of wild and terrifying magic, wondrous opportunity, and great danger. Ed Greenwood, creator of the Forgotten Realms® and New York Times-bestselling author of Spellfire and Elminster: The Making Of A Mage, and Robert B. Marks, author of Diablo: Demonsbane, welcome you to the first movement of The Eternity Quartet.

Millennia have passed since the ice left the world. New and hungry civilizations have arisen, eager for land and conquest. In the valley of the Godsblood, Lord Emgrar and his people face a terrible ultimatum: surrender or death. Lord Kutharl has come to conquer and enslave, and the price of survival will be very high indeed.”

Ed Greenwood, New York Times bestselling author of Spellfire and Elminster: The Making Of A Mage, and the creator of the Forgotten Realms®, and Robert B. Marks, author of Diablo: Demonsbane, The EverQuest Companion, and Garwulf’s Corner, have teamed up for an groundbreaking new project launching on February 15, 2015: The Eternity Quartet.

Consisting of 16 separate yet linked stories, each providing a snapshot of a time and place, The Eternity Quartet tells the tale of a fantasy world from one ice age to the next, covering around 25,000 years. Structured like a symphony, The Eternity Quartet is divided into four movements representing the four seasons, each containing four stories.

The first story – Seizing the Torch, by Robert B. Marks – takes place as the glaciers recede and a tribe of hunter gatherers face a previously unknown challenge. The second – An Evil Wind, by Ed Greenwood – sees the leaders of an early civilization confront overwhelming odds and make a terrible sacrifice for survival.

The plan is to release one story per month. The first 14 stories will be released on Amazon Kindle for $2.99 each. The final two stories will be published along with the rest of The Eternity Quartet in an anthology in paperback and e-book format in mid-late 2016.

“We have wanted to work together for over a decade,” said Marks. “To be able to work with an author of Ed’s caliber on a project like this is a dream come true.”

“As a veteran gamer and game writer, Rob understands the fun in storytelling,” said Greenwood, “and this is a great chance for us to have fun together that should come through to the reader loud and clear. I love collaborating with talented, creative, nice people – and Rob is talented, creative, nice people!”

Seizing the Torch, by Robert B. Marks, will be released on February 15, 2015, and is now available for pre-order at:

Unannounced Game Job Opening: 3D Artist – Diablo Hinted?

Blizzard Entertainment is looking for a 3D Artist to join an unannounced game team. This is not for the Overwatch game nor for StarCraft II: Legacy of the Void.

Something interesting is the job opening tweeted had a photo of the sign on the door with the words “There is no cow level”.

Now there are a few possibilities here. Either:

1. The sign is just an in-house joke, and the unannounced game has nothing to do with the Diablo universe. Or…
2. The unannounced game is related to the Diablo universe, and the sign is hinting at this. (“There is No Cow Level” is what the Cow King says when you open the gate to Wymsyshire in reference to Diablo II’s Cow Level.)

Regardless of whatever the sign means or whether it has no meaning at all, there are a few possible scenarios for this unannounced game to be.

What this unannounced game is NOT:

1. It is NOT StarCraft II: Legacy of the Void. It was announced at BlizzCon 2014 and we have known the title name since 2008.
2. It is NOT a World of Warcraft expansion. Warlords of Draenor just launched.
3. It is NOT Overwatch. There is a list of job openings under the title OVERWATCH.
4. It is NOT the Next-Gen MMO Titan (that was officially cancelled a few months ago)

What this unannounced game might potentially be:

1. A Diablo III expansion
2. A Diablo-related game in a different Genre such as an MMO or card game?
3. New IP (not related to Warcraft, StarCraft, or Diablo) in a genre Blizzard is familiar with or not familiar with. (Blizzard has demonstrated it is not the RTS exclusive developer. So far Blizzard has adventured into the MMORPG, CCG, a Brawler multiplayer game, and now a team-based shooter/FPS).
4. StarCraft: Ghost was never officially cancelled. It was merely postponed for another time. So it might actually show up someday unless Blizzard finally cancels it. Only thing is the storyline of the Nihilistic/Swingin’ Ape Studio/then Blizzard era is outdated. It might have to be either a new story or it might even have no single-player component like Overwatch which lacks one — which is a first for Blizzard.

For now, we won’t know what this unannounced game is all about until Blizzard makes an official reveal announcement either at GamesCom, PAX East or BlizzCon. Until then we can only hope and speculate.

Interested in this job position? Head over to the application form.
