NetEase Q2 2020 Investors Call: Lack of Diablo Immortal

NetEase completely missed the opportunity to talk about Diablo Immortal during their NetEase Q2 2020 Earnings Call earlier today at 7:30am EST.

Wyatt Cheng recently posted an update on Diablo Immortal to announce the impending Diablo Immortal company-wide internal playtest among employees around the world.

NetEase quickly updated the Diablo Immortal (China) website with a chinese translation of Wyatt Cheng’s post.

A few days before that, the Diablo Immortal (China) website took the world by storm with the updated polished 3D models of the Diablo Immortal classes, and gameplay video — which has circulated and has been covered around the world in several languages: fansites, gaming websites, Twitch and YouTube content creators — driving enthusiasm and momentum.

NetEase didn’t capitulate on that success. The Western website did not even mention that update, so it was a NetEase success that put the game back into the spotlight for an entire week before Wyatt Cheng posted his update.

Here is a short excerpt of where Diablo Immortal was mentioned in passing just once throughout the entire earnings call. No one asked about Diablo Immortal during the Q&A, either.

NetEase Q2 2020 Investors Call

Moving on to licensed games, the strong performance of Blizzard Entertainment’s World of Warcraft carried on well, achieving a record number of peak concurrent users in the first half of this year.

Beyond our progress in the domestic market, we have also made multiple headway with our international initiatives. Our overseas online game net revenues hit a new record high in the second quarter, propelled by robust performances from Knives Out and Life-After in Japan.

For example, our collaboration with the Tokyo Ghoul anime series for Knives Out was a huge success with the game topping the iOS grossing chart for nearly a whole week.

Earlier today, we launched EVE: Echoes, a next-gen sandbox MMO mobile game that has been long awaited by the user community.

In addition to the success of our existing games, we have many exciting games in our pipeline with upcoming titles that include Onmyoji: Yokai Koya, The Lord of the Rings: Rise to War, Harry Potter: Magic Awakened, For All Time, Revelation mobile game, Ghost World Chronicle, Nightmare Breaker, Infinite Lagrange, Diablo® Immortal™ and Pokémon Quest.
